With huge potential to optimize how many industries operate, artificial intelligence (AI) technologies enable human capabilities, such as understanding, reasoning, planning, communication and perception, to be undertaken by software. This is happening increasingly effectively, efficiently and at a lower cost as the technology becomes more sophisticated.
AI is already transforming industries: while it seems likely that manufacturing operations such as automotive, as well as telecom industries will see headcount culls as AI rationalizes them, there are likely to be jobs created elsewhere as AI leads to a whole new hybrid job type. This is especially true within professional services and tech, where job creation is predicted.
That view is backed up by Pew Research, which found that 48% of experts surveyed felt that robots and digital agents will replace blue- and white-collar jobs. However, that is balanced by a further 52% of experts who expect robotics and AI to create more jobs than they take as we create new ways of working.
For those with the abilities and skills, it is a good time to be in the sector. Emsi Burning Glass in partnership with the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), assessed more than 45,000 websites, and millions of job postings. It identified a list of over 80 skills and clusters associated with AI jobs and created a list of the top AI skills in demand. It has also identified three key regions for jobs in the sector: Singapore, California, and Washington, D.C.
The report indicates that Singapore remains a global hub for AI jobs, listing over twice as many AI jobs per capita than any other country. In the US, the biggest concentration of AI jobs is in California, where its 80,238 jobs in 2021 clocks in at over twice as many as Texas, which had the second-highest total with 34,011. The next three highest locations for AI jobs are New York, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
When it comes to the actual skills workers need to have on their resumes to succeed towards a successful application, these are the seven clusters of skill sets that the report identified.
- Artificial Intelligence
- Natural Language Processing
- Neural Networks
- Machine Learning
- Robotics
- Visual Image Recognition
